A question I often get is how child support is set when parents are exercising a 50/50 possession schedule. The Texas Legislature has not provided any guidelines for 50/50 possession schedules or child support in a case involving equal possession time. In practice, family lawyers and judges have created three different methods when setting child support in these cases. The most common is what we call an offset–first determine what each parent would pay the other in child support under the Texas guidelines then whoever has a larger income would pay the difference of the two numbers. Sometimes, a parent will be ordered or will agree to pay guideline child support despite equal time sharing and sometimes neither will pay child support.
